English Decoration in the 18th Century by John Fowler and John Cornforth

This book is the result of a collaboration between an historically-minded decorator and an architectural historian, both vitally concerned with the preservation of English country houses.? Its approach is fundamentally one of the social history; explaining how new forms of decoration were introduced and came to be used in the context of life in a great house.? This is examined in the light of contemporary documents and with reference to interesting interiors still surviving.

The aim of the book is to create a sense of that harmony and balance that was so crucial to the 18^th?Century and is the essence of all great decorations.? The many illustrations, mostly taken specially, include both general views and details, and reproductions of original 18^th?century drawings.
